VirtuED Tour of Sun Labs
Today, a group of Stanislaus County educators launched the VirtuED blog. This blog will track the projects and platforms being explored by educators wanting to bring virtual world platforms into the classroom. The project will likely extend beyond Stanislaus County in the future, but for now the team includes representatives from the Stanislaus County Office of Education, CTAP Region 6, Sylvan Union School District, and Modesto City Schools. We will have blog posts from a variety of people giving their perspectives on these technologies.
Our first platform that we are focusing on is Sun Microsystems Wonderland. This platform is still early in development, version 0.3. Version 0.5 will be released by Summer 2008 (hopefully). There are major improvements that will be included in this release that we are really looking forward to seeing. We have an enthusiastic group of educators and technologists involved in this group. I look forward to some exciting projects growing out of this effort.
We probably won’t have a steady flow of posts until we get past May. We just got our test servers online this week, and will be tuning them next week. We’ll then be ready to start experimenting with the platform. We’ll post our experiences and impressions as this platform moves through the development to version 1.0 We will eventually involve some students in this blog as well. So check back from time to time and see what we’re up to.

Will there be any possibility for interested parties from elsewhere to volunteer time and talent (such as it is) to any part of this project? I finally managed to get the Wonderland server up on a linux box and connect to it from a client on my home network, but one can only listen to info related to project black box and the history of shipping containers for so long(even with the amazing spacial sound)… What was really cool was working on a shared geometry X-app with my son while he was upstairs and I was down..
