The Wall Street Journal had an article in April about business and the next area of interest in virtual worlds (after the failed setting up shop in-world phase):
Virtual World Gets Another Life
The article highlights the current interest by companies in having private and controlled virtual spaces for their employees to meet, collaborate and communicate with each other. Security and control are the important issues now that these companies have moved beyond wanting virtual store fronts. There are several very viable platforms on the horizon (Qwaq, Multiverse, Wonderland, and others) that will challenge Linden Lab’s Second Life. Second Life has been online since 2003, and has pretty much had this market to itself up until now. Even Linden Lab is acknowledging this trend and has recently announced that they will develop a server for IBM that will be housed behind IBM’s firewall.
