Interestingly, tonight after coming home I stumbled on an announcement that the next Sims 2 expansion will be based on IKEA furniture for the popular Sims 2 series:
This is definitely an example of in-game advertising that is not ‘in your face’ or distracting from the virtual world. People play the Sims 2 to build houses and play out their virtual Sims lives in these houses. Furniture is the foundation of the bulk of gameplay. The expansion clearly identifies the source of the new furniture as IKEA, and the player will identify this new content with this brand. As long as the content is of sufficient quality, a positive feedback is likely from this partnership.
This is an excellent example of how advertising can be creatively deployed into virtual environments without disrupting or distracting from the experience. Too bad the expansion in this case is not be partially subsidized by IKEA advertising dollars to make this expansion more affordable for all the Sims 2 fans out there.
